Flintshire Cultural Celebrations

Project Area: Festivals and Events
County: Flintshire

Project Officer: Andrew Redfern
Axis: 3

What is the project?

This project helps promote and celebrate culture within rural Flintshire. We can work with qualifying groups to offer individual assistance, support and funding to help develop events, jointly market and promote events and help build the skills of event organisers and volunteers. As well as festivals and events we can also assist groups with projects that are aimed at celebrating local culture in whatever form that might be.

Support is provided in the following ways:

  • Advice & assistance
One-to-one advice and assistance is given to groups, as well as offering online resources that enable groups to access useful information and best practice.
  • Capacity building
Capacity building is offered to groups, who either currently hold events and festivals or are looking to develop new ones, on subjects such as marketing, event sustainability, holding bilingual events, licensing, event planning and risk assessments.
  • Funding
Event organisers can apply for funding to develop new events and develop existing ones.

Project Examples/History

The Cultural Celebrations project has already helped a number of community groups to deliver ventures. A few examples are featured below.

Village Bookish Festival
Cadwyn Clwyd supported the cost of performers and workshops during the Gwaenysgor Bookish Festival which took place between 17-20 September. The festival had the thumbs up from celebrated poet Les Barker who performed at the festival when a community poetry book was launched at the festival, entitled ‘Forget Me Nots’. Highlights of the Festival included a story telling event, a verse and vino evening, a book bazaar and a talk by author David Rowe, author of the newly-published book Pubs of Flintshire, which has a section on Gwaenysgor’s Eagle and Child.

David Lloyd Plaque and Concert
Cadwyn Clwyd’s assisted Capel y Berthen, Lixwm to hold a concert and stall a plaque to commemorate the life David Lloyd the great Welsh tenor. Rhys Meirion took part in the sold out concert, which took place right next to the eisteddfod field where David Lloyd found fame at just 21 years of age, in 1933. David Lloyd, who was born in Trelogan, was honoured during the event with the unveiling of a plaque placed in the wall of the field where the eisteddfod in which he was talent spotted by one of the judges took place.
