Community Energy
November 02, 2009
Project Area: Alternative Energy
County: Flintshire
Project Officer: Silas Jones
Axis: 4
What is the Project?
The Community and Agri Energy project comprises a number of initiatives which aim to find solutions to improve economic and environmental sustainability of businesses and communities. Project elements will pilot methods of making best use of the area’s natural and environmental assets for economic and community benefit by
- converting waste products into useable and marketable products
- reducing farm costs and increasing efficiency through environmental practices
- enabling communities to explore new methods of utilising renewable energy sources and reducing energy consumption
The project will be implemented through the following means: feasibility stage; pilot and experimental stage in controlled environments; pre-market testing stage.
The project is currently split into the following areas;
- Flintshire Agri Energy Diversification Project
- Community Renewables Project
Flintshire Agri Energy Diversification Project
This project aims to encourage farms in Rural Flintshire to diversify into renewable energy generation in order to make their farms both more economically and environmentally sustainable. The project also aims to encourage energy efficiency on farms and in farming households.
Cadwyn Clwyd wishes to facilitate the setting up of a number of pilot projects, which will showcase renewable energy generation and energy efficient techniques on farms.
The project particularly wishes to promote the use of resources available within rural Flintshire.
Cadwyn Clwyd is asking farmers to come forward if they are interested in taking part in the Energy Diversification Pilot or if they have a specific idea for a pilot project.
Some example ideas could be:
- Solar Hot Water Heating on a dairy farm for pre-heating wash down water
- Micro Wind Turbine to generate electricity on farm
- Micro Hydro Electric Scheme to generate electricity on farm
- Wood fuelled boilers or combined heat and power plants
- Biogas manufacture or Anaerobic Digestion
Community Renewables Project
Does your community have the potential to produce it own Electricity?
We can support projects in rural communities in Flintshire that reduce energy consumption, produce energy or heat or raise awareness.
Eligible Projects might include:
Carrying out Feasibility Studies into the following
- Wind turbines
- Ground Source Heat pumps
- Solar Thermal water heating
- Photovoltaic installations
- Hydroelectric Generation
- Biomass (i.e. wood fired boilers)
Installing one of the above technologies
Carrying out awareness raising activates
