LEADER Theme 1 – Adding value to local identity, natural and cultural resources

LEADER theme 1 will support projects exploring new ways to develop, enhance or sustainably exploit the commercial and recreational value of rural North East Wales’s natural and cultural resources.  In particular, it will take advantage of two major ‘hooks’ for visitors: The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site (WHS).  Example initiatives will include: piloting new technology, equipment and techniques for heritage interpretation; training and educational activities for heritage groups and volunteers; trialling new events and activities; piloting innovative support mechanisms for groups and enterprises within these areas to capitalise on visitor stays; and investigating, through feasibility or scoping studies, ways forward for local groups to safeguard, develop and sustainably exploit larger-scale heritage assets.

Projects supported include an I beacons Network providing digital interpretation straight to visitors’ smartphones, a project looking at exciting new ways for using old redundant red telephone boxes, a Dark Skies Scoping Study investigating whether the AONB could achieve Dark Skies Status, and a Digital Heritage Training project.
