Rural Development Plan

What is the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013?

The Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 is part of a joint Welsh Assemble Government/European Union strategy to make our country a better place to live and work.

The RDP does not only apply to things like farming and forestry, it applies to everybody in rural areas and all aspects of rural life.

The RDP programme will run over a period of seven years until December 2013. The Plan consists of four main parts, which are called Axis 1, 2, 3 and 4. Cadwyn Clwyd will be focusing on projects that fit within Axis 3 and Axis 4;

Axis 3 – Axis 3 aims to diversify the rural economy by providing support to farming families to diversify into non agricultural activities, support for the creation and development of micro-enterprises and support for the encouragement of tourism activities. It also aims to improve the quality of life in rural communities by supporting basic services for the rural economy and population, village renewal, conservation and upgrading of the rural heritage and training for rural economic actors.

Axis 4 - Axis 4 uses the LEADER approach to engage grass-roots communities and to encourage the generation of new innovative ways to sustain rural development in Wales in the longer term. Support is also available to fund co-operation projects between Wales and both other parts of the United Kingdom and other European Union Member States.

For further information on all for axes, please consult the RDP Executive Summary document which available from the Welsh Assembly Government website.

Rural Development Strategies

To access funding from the RDP, both counties needed a 'Rural Development Strategies'. These rural strategies set out the priorities for rural Denbighshire and Flintshire for the 2007-2013 programming period. They are set within the context of local, regional and national strategies and plans and have particular relevance to activities under the Rural Development Plan (RDP) for Wales 2007-2013.

Where can RDP funding be spent?

RDP funding can be spent in eligible rural wards of Denbighshire and Flintshire. A list and map of eligible wards can be accessed below;
